History

fondazione nazionale carlo collodi opera The Foundation evolved from the Committee set up for a Monument to Pinocchio, chaired by  professor Rolando Anzilotti, with as its assets the initial nucleus of the Pinocchio Park, created by the Committee. Effectively, the Committee had already launched important cultural initiatives for the collection of Collodi’s works, the study of Pinocchio and its author and multidisciplinary research into Lorenzini’s masterpiece, above all in the ambit of pedagogy and children’s literature. By 1962 the Pinocchio Park had become a consolidated reality, the scientific activities had evolved to acquire an important role, the original Committee had been expanded through the enthusiastic participation of personalities of national standing, while the collection of Collodi’s works all over the world had produced extraordinary results. The Park had established its role as a solid and lasting benchmark for international institutional and cultural activities. Thus the Fondazione Nazionale Carlo Collodi was set up, and was recognised by the Decree of the President of the Republic no. 1313 on 18 July 1962. This decision, which defined the role, the aims and the organisational and institutional status of the body which owned the Park, led to the subsequent development and success of the Park itself as a permanent cultural structure rather than a commercial tourist enterprise.
The cultural activities of the Fondazione Nazionale Carlo Collodi take place at a number of levels: local, regional, national and international: Those organised in Collodi are largely national and international (Pinocchio’s Birthday, competitions for schools and artists, literary prizes, international conventions, seminars, study meetings, art exhibitions or shows of children’s book illustrations, performances, the Collodi Library, the International Study Centre for Children’s Literature, scholarships). In many cases the Foundation operates directly, within Italy and abroad, organising competitions, shows, conventions, research and documentation initiatives; it also collaborates on similar activities with national and international cultural institutes (Italian Cultural Institutes, municipalities, and universities in Italy and abroad).
