Bacchus
Son of Jupiter and Semele, when his mother died before his birth Jupiter saved the foetus by sewing it into his thigh. After his birth, Bacchus was reared by the nymphs and introduced into the cultivation of grapes. The god of wine and of viticulture, which also represented the energy of nature in a more general sense, he is shown here in the act of offering a plate piled with grapes in his right hand, while in the left he is holding a basket, it too overflowing with grapes.
