Two Satyrs
These are set leaning against the rocaille-work pilasters, gazing upwards. The one on the right appears to be male and that on the left female. These were the genii of the woods, the waters and the mountains, and together with the nymphs and Bacchantes made up the retinue of Bacchus. They are shown with the goat’s hooves they were attributed in the popular imagination.
