Faunus playing the flute
The genius of the woods, waters and mountains is portrayed as a youth playing the flute, a typical rustic instrument, with a lion’s pelt thrown over his shoulder. Faunus was one of the oldest Latin deities; later he was also identified with the god Pan and was venerated in particular by the shepherds since he was held to render the flocks fertile and keep wolves at bay.
